Thread: pgAdmin 3.0 builds
The pgAdmin 3.0 builds are at https://developer.pgadmin.org/~dpage/v3.0/.
Barring any show-stopper issues, these are what will be released on Thursday.
--
As a reminder to packagers:
- This release removes dependencies on QtWebKit and/or QtWebEngine, and uses the users default browser instead.
- Gnome 3.26 or above will require the TopIcons Plus extension to be installed (or an equivalent). Ubuntu already seems to have this, per my testing. Fedora does not.
A future release will resolve this last issue one way or another, but that's a lot of work.
Thanks.

Will take care of this.

Are you expecting the pgAdmin package should install this extension if the desktop session is GNOME && it's version is >=3.26?

Not the package you're working on. We should probably warn the user if they need it though.

Ignore it for now. I'm far from convinced that it's not something odd with your VMs.

I downloaded fresh ISOs of Windows 7 64bit and Windows 2012r2 64bit from MSDN, and installed them both in VMware Fusion 8.5.10. Each had 4GB RAM and 2 CPU cores assigned, otherwise default configs. I did not use Easy Install, to ensure that no VMware Tools got installed (thus leaving Windows completely clean).
- On Windows 7, IE crashed when loading pgAdmin. No great surprise - that version is very old and won't work anyway. Installed Chrome and all is good.
- On Windows 2012r2, IE didn't crash, but as expected couldn't display pgAdmin anyway. Installed Chrome and all is good.

Hi Dave,
Now i know the actual root-cause of the issue. After further investigation, i realized that pgAdmin4 applications works fine on same Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 07 64 bit VM once Administrator user does not contain any space. Normally I use Fahar Abbas with Administrator user privileges and issue is reproducible on my all VMs except windows 10 where i was using administrator user instead of Fahar Abbas. On Wed, Apr 11, 2018 at 9:51 AM, Fahar Abbas <fahar.abbas@enterprisedb.com> wrote:

All,
As you've probably seen, there were show-stopper issues with these builds unfortunately. I'm just testing the last fix, and will create new builds ASAP and follow up here.
Apologies for the inconvenience.

New builds are at https://developer.pgadmin.org/~dpage/v3.0-2/.
These fix the Windows crash that Fahar found (which happened if the user had a space in their usename), and fix password encryption/decryption under Python 3.
Apologies for the inconvenience again. I still hope to release tomorrow, but let me know if that's not enough time and I can do Friday instead.

I won't be able to create the Debian packages this week because I'm at
pgconf.de.
No problem.

This would need more testing anyway.
Should be pretty straightforward - in RPM terms it's a one-line change to remove a "Requires" line from the spec file. Updates to the other dependency packages will almost certainly take a lot more time unfortunately.

Hmm. This seems to be very desktop specific. What if the user isn't
using Gnome at all?
From my research, Gnome seems to be the only window manager where this is an issue (it seems to be quite a controversial change). We will be working on a better, more permanent solution in the future, however that's a lot of effort, and not something we could hold up 3.0 for.
Thanks.

Hi Dave,
Did you remove the folder with the builds?
What is the git SHA from which the release is going to be created from?
Thanks

Hi Hackers,
Good job getting this release out. It was hard work, but you were able to pull it off.
Looking back at the last 3 week I have a feeling that we should discuss if there is any way to change the release process in order to make it less painful, more automated and be able to release in shorter cycles.
Good Job

The python part is causing headaches - the move from flask-babel to
flask-babelex is hurting because that's not available in Debian, and
the move as such is controversial:
https://github.com/mattupstate/flask-security/ issues/715
Hmm, we had to update as flask_babel isn’t working with modern versions of Babel.
At the moment this looks like a huge time sink to package.
Can flask_babelex be built as a private package and installed in the pgAdmin web/ directory? That’s what Devrim does with a bunch of the dips for the RPMs.
Another option which may be a lot easier in the long run would be to not use the packaged python reps at all, and create a single dependency package that is basically a Python virtual envy used just by pgAdmin. I know it’s not ideal from a packaging purists perspective, but my view is that it’s better the users have the tools they want than the packaging follows the letter of the rule book.
Thanks!

It's supposed to launch in the browser. My work machines are running 10.12.5, and it works on them. Can you see anything in the system logs etc. that might indicate why it's not starting the browser?

Ok, interesting, that didn't make it to the notable section of the release notes (https://www.pgadmin.org/), I'd say rather that's rather notable. Not that I know it's supposed to be opening in browser, I can see that it isn't opening because the pgadmin process is still running, even though I closed the chrome tab. But since there's no application process present, I see no way to quit the application except by killing the process manually....

It's the very first item:
- The desktop runtime now runs as a system tray application and utilises the browser on the system to display pgAdmin. This resolves numerous bugs and issues caused by QtWebKit/QtWebEngine.

Click the icon in the system tray and you can configure, exit or open new windows from there.

@dpage Ok, wow, I did read that, but I didn't read it as "only utilizes" the browser, this is a huge change for everyone in my office, and no one caught that message in the release notes. Also, on a mac, it's not called the "system tray", which probably adds to the confusion for all us mac users here, the icon shows up in the "menu bar" - https://support.apple.com/ kb/PH25077?locale=en_US

Just a FYI -- I am about add two new subpackages to pgAdmin4 RPMs:
- pgadmin4-desktop-common
- pgadmin4-desktop-gnome
I aimed to split desktop components into their subpackages, in order to:
* For "server-only" users, do not require qt libraries.
* For desktop users: Require topicons only on GNOME
Just in case you want to do the same.
