Thread: Distribution package for OSX

Distribution package for OSX

From
Igor Korot
Date:
Hi,
I'm looking for a ready-to-use distribution package of the PostgreSQL ODBC
driver for OSX 10.8 (.dmg file).

Is it readily available or I will have to build the driver manually?

Thank you.

You will need to build it manually I am afraid. There are no official
packages provided for OSX on odbc.postgresql.org.

This is what I get trying to compile latest source:

As I said I have 10.8 that was orinally installed on the system.
And I will try to connect to 9.5.2 which is running on Linux.

Do you know which driver version I should use?

Thank you.

Apple does ship a copy of libpq in /usr/lib, but it's generally a bit
back-rev, and you're working in a macOS release that's itself several
years out of date. You'll need to install a newer libpq to satisfy this
ODBC version, evidently.

There isn't any separate distribution of libpq alone; you need to
build and install all of Postgres into, say, /usr/local. That's
not hard, but if you don't enjoy rolling it all yourself, you might
want to consider installing from MacPorts or Homebrew.

Is there a way to see what version of PostgreSQL is installed on
the system?
Because then it would be easy to find out what version of ODBC
driver I should have to connect.
Or maybe I already have the driver, since I have iODBC installed?

Just checked - driver is not there.

Thank you.

pg_config --version. You just need to look for its binary in your
system. For homebrew, which I actively use, that would be under
/usr/local/.

A question I should have asked earlier, is it a requirement that ODBC be
used for the connection?

In other words is this a third party app needing ODBC or something you
wrote that you want to connect via ODBC?

You should be careful if you consider ODBC, its usage makes sense if
you want to have an application layer able to work with multiple
database systems as its routines are the same for all ODBC drivers,
say Oracle, MSSQL, Postgres and DB2. So using it can simplify your
life, and also complicate it as each database system has its
properties, SQL grammar, session tweaks, etc.
Igors-MacBook-Air:buildMac igorkorot$ pg_config --version
PostgreSQL 9.1.9
So which version of the driver I can use?
The one that will understand the version I have and successfully can
be configured
and compiled.

Thank you.

This is a software I'm writing and for testing purposes I need to use it.
It is cross-platform cross-database one.

One of the use-cases is to connect to the PostgreSQL thru the ODBC.

BTW, is there another way (a "native" way to talk to PostgreSQL server?

Thank you.

PQsetSingleRowMode is only available since Postgres 9.2, so you need
to install a newer version via homebrew or macports.

I don't really care about latest and greatest.
All I need is to test whether I can connect to the PostgreSQL DB thru the ODBC
with iODBC on OSX and execute some queries.

Thank you.

So looking here:

https://www.postgresql.org/support/versioning/

you see Postgres 9.2 was released September 2012.

The looking here:

https://www.postgresql.org/ftp/odbc/versions/src/

you see that you probably want an psqlodbc version that is
psqlodbc-09.01.0100 or older.

Using libpq:

https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.5/static/libpq.html

There is also JDBC:

https://jdbc.postgresql.org/

Then there are all the other language bindings eg Python, PERL, etc. It
really depends on what you are calling native.

Got to your other post that mentioned you are using Postgres 9.1.9.
So that pushes the psqlodbc version back to psqlodbc-09.00.0310 or older.

Using libpg, as it uses PostgreSQL calls, and I presume, is written in C/C++.
Versus ODBC/JDBC which ingtroducec another layer in between client app and
DB server.

I will try that version and if not go older.

I successfully compiled and installed the driver in /usr/local/lib.
However, when I tried to run the iODBC Administrator and tried to add
the new DSN
the driver was not available.
Trying to run "ldconfig" I see that this binary is not available.

I configured the driver with
../configure --with-odbc=/Library/Framework/iODBC.Framework/iODBC
Am I missing a configure switch?

Thank you.

Should it not be:

--with-iodbc=DIR path or direct iodbc-config file

Yes, I gave it a DIR parameter - a directory where iODBC manager is installed.

Yes, but the switch you showed using was:

--with-odbc

not

--with-iodbc

So which one did you use?

You might also want to look in the conf.log to see if there are any
errors reported. Because when I tried with --with-odbc I got at the end
of the ./configure:

configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --with-odbc

Though make and make install still ran:

aklaver@panda:~/test/psqlodbc-09.05.0300> sudo make install

ldconfig -n /usr/local/lib

Libraries have been installed in:

If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
    - add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
      during execution
    - add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
      during linking
    - use the `-Wl,-rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
    - have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'

See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.

That was "--with-iodbc". Sorry for the typo.

Everything ran successfully.

Thank you.

BTW, is there a setup library generated? Maybe that the reason the driver is
not in the list?
