PostgreSQL reference coffee mug

From
Matthias Apitz
Date:
Hello,

Nearly 20 years ago, I ordered some 50 vi-reference coffee mugs like this
one here (not exactly the same, but to give you an idea):

https://www.getdigital.eu/vi-reference-mug.html

for our vi-lovers in-house and the admins of our customers.

I'd like to do the same now with a reference mug for PostgreSQL, for
example with the most important Meta-commands, sys tables, etc.
I have nearby a copy shop which would produce it based on a JPEG file.

Before designing our own, I wanted to ask here if such a beast exists
already or, if not, maybe even a Reference Card in PDF or JPEG to use it as a
starting point.

Thanks in advance for any hints.

I could definitely use a mug large enough to hold all that.

Thank you, Pavel. This is ofc to much for a coffee mug. For using it as
a Reference Card in paper form, it's a pity that it is not written in English.

I'm working on my own for the mug and will publish the PDF and
libreoffice ODT version here. The max size of the image for the mug is
7.5cm high x 16cm around the body of the coffee mug.

A question to PostgreSQL.org: Are we allowed to use the PostgreSQL logo
on such produced mugs without selling them, just as a gift.
And can we put our own logo together with the one of PostgreSQL on the
same coffee mug.

To whom our Legal Dept. would have to ask this officially? Or is it just
free and allowed?

Thanks

Use of the PostgreSQL logo falls under the project Trademark Policy, which you
can find here:

  https://www.postgresql.org/about/policies/trademarks/

There is a point of contact listed there as well in case there are more
detailed questions.

Actually that's wrong, because \s prints history not variables. This
needs to read
  \set alone ...

I'm *not* going to get into this, because I know I'm capable of spending
days on it. I would definitely look into using different font sizes and
colors and make it much denser, for one thing.

I'm attaching as well the source for libreoffice calc, so you are free
to make a nicer version. Do not forget the final size in PDF as
7.5cm x 16cm.

I printed the PDF on paper, cut it to the size of 7.5cm x 16cm and
wrapped it around the mugs I have here. 16cm is not correct. My mugs have
more or less 7-8cm as diameter which gives around:

$ bc -l
>>> 7.5 * pi(2)
23.550

I will go tomorrow to the copy shop and ask/measure it there...
Which means also, we have more space for more information.

Very, very nice! I'll be using this quite a bit.

Does there exist anywhere a Reference Card for PostgreSQL SQL commands?
My impression is that every database has its own slightly different
version of SQL that it responds to.

Resulted, that the size can be 20.12cm X 7.5cm. Attached is an updated

I personally find that, after \l (list databases), connecting to a different
one with \c is pretty useful.

\? : to list help subjects
\? options
\? variables
\h

\watch [SEC] : is helpful, for example for keeping an eye on connections via pg_stat_activity

\e | \ef | \ev : is incredibly helpful if you are working on a query, function or view which you immediately want to
loadinto the database via the query buffer (setting the EDITOR env will help). Best done in production, of course.

\set ON_ERROR_STOP on : to abort on first error

\timing on : very helpful to see how fast or slowly your function or query runs

Perhaps some example pg_stat_activity calls might be worth list, eg:

SELECT pid, age(clock_timestamp(), query_start), usename, query
    FROM pg_stat_activity
WHERE query != '<IDLE>' AND query NOT ILIKE '%pg_stat_activity%'
    ORDER BY query_start desc;

It is already in the background (done with libreoffice calc). See the
attached PDF. Only the black lines of the Elephant logo are a problem.
Don't know how to solve this.

Agree with Matthias here, the elephant needs to fade, not just be in the
background. reading black on dark-ish-blue background is quite uncomfortable.

Or maybe make it small, below the last line?
