Thread: Local User Group List - Need Help!
Hi Everyone,
Good news - we now have a list of the available local user groups off of the "Community" page on the website: http://www.postgresql.org/community/user-groups/
However, at the time of sending this email, the list is very incomplete - as you will notice, I've only added a few of the PUGs in the US and one in Sweden. So, please help the effort! If you have an active PUG, please reply to the list with the following:
PUG Name
Locale (City or Region the PUG serves)
Country
Website (if you have one)
Mailing List (if you have one, which I hope you do if you don't have a website)
And I will add it to the list.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Please note that the PostgreSQLFr association is the "french speaking" user group. Albeit most of the PostgreSQLFr members live in France, we have contacts in Belgium, Switzerland and we're looking forward opportunities in Quebec and North/West Africa. Would it be possible to replace "France" by "France and French speaking countries" ? Please also note that we have a twitter account here : https://twitter.com/PostgreSQLFR -- damien

It's more like an administrative umbrella for doing things when money is involved. Given the current state of things around that entity in France, I'd like that this entity remains hidden in the background and only there to provide with facilities when some are needed. Yes, a PostgreSQL User Group in France would be awesome, and I'd like to participate into building one, organizing meetups, (monthly?) mini-conferences for the evening, etc, much as what other PUGs are doing. No, PostgreSQL FR is not doing any of that. Regards, -- Dimitri Fontaine http://2ndQuadrant.fr PostgreSQL : Expertise, Formation et Support

I wish there were one in the UK, and I would even considerhelping to organise it, depending on the location. There are quite a few users / developers here, and a number ofmajor organisations such as OpenStreetMap. Regards, Todd

It depends on your definition of "PUG" :) If it's a group of PostgreSQL users doing things together to promote PostgreSQL, then I guess the PostgreSQLFr association can be treated as a PUG. The main differences with most other PUGs are that we have a legal entity and we operate at higher level than just a city or a country. > It's more like an administrative umbrella > for doing things when money is involved. I'd love to see local PUGs blooming in Paris, Lyon, Bruxelles, Montreal, etc. And I'm sure the PostgreSQLFr association would support any local group in the French speaking area. Speaking of Paris, there's been multiple public Postgres user gatherings since 2009 at least. To my knowledge the last meet-up in Paris was last September organized by Christophe Chauvet and others. The PostgreSQLFr association paid the meal and drinks for all attendees. If you want to organize a meet-up, a mini-conference or what-other-PUGs-are-doing, you're more than welcome. The PostgreSQLFr association will help you too. You can set up a web page or a list and call that a "Paris PUG" :) But for now there's no specific website or mailing list for it : the meet-ups are organized through www.postgresql.fr and pgsql-fr-general. So I see no reason why we should remove these links from the user group page. Regards, -- damien

The page is to promote "local user groups" which would be groups primarily accessible in whatever locale they are. The aimis to drive a more active participating PostgreSQL community by enabling organic growth in particular regions and citiesthrough meetups, activities, etc. Probably a good measure of local activity would be having at least one meetup orconference per year. This where PG.FR is interesting - it straddles both being a local user group while having a more global reach based on acommon language. With that said, I would recommend to leave the listing as is, until more local groups start up in France, but would add a listing to other countries that have a PG.FR representative there so people are aware that they couldcontact / join PG.FR for more a more localized community. That way we know that there are regional contacts acrossthe space that PG.FR covers. Best, Jonathan

Yeah, you're right. There is a nice mixture there. I liked the term "wrong side of
the Atlantic", I'm trying to guess which one it is... :P
