New Live CD needed

From
"Joshua D. Drake"
Date:
Hello,

We are going to need a new Live CD. I was hoping that we could have one
with a 8.3Beta but... the only way that is going to happen is if we get
a Beta (or Alpha) within 3 weeks.

Any chance of that?

If not, we need a new Live CD with 8.2.4. We need this, before the end
of June please. By June 25th if possible.

Sincerely,

Joshua D. Drake

I don't know the exact intention, but is it possible to get some more
for the european group(s)?

Also, we really need to get an interesting sample database. When I was at

When I think LiveCD, I think of a *nix distro that boots from a CD to a
fully usable operating system and doesn't touch the hard drive. What
does LiveCD mean in this Postgres context? I didn't see a whole lot on
the pgfoundry/livecd page, just

'This project aims to build the PostgreSQL Live CD (iso image), share
tools and HOWTOs, and make them "up to date".'

In lieu of making a coaster, does this mean that it's a LiveCD distro of
Nix with Postgres et al installed?

Thanks,

Kevin

Exactly that, except that we include a fully functioning postgresql with
pgadmin etc... already configured.

Not having looked at the livecd itself, but adding pagila for example
shouldn't be too hard, no?

There's a setting in majordomo called "eliminatecc". You likely want to
set that one if you haven't already, and it shouldn't make a difference
if you're in CC or not. (Not sure which is the default)

Including the senders in the CC row is more or less standard practice on
these lists AFAIK, and has been for many years. Let's you easily filter
out which discussions you're actively a part in.

We need two things:
1. Quantities and Dates for the CDs you need.
2. You to figure out deal with tax issues

(2) is difficult; we've found that the EU taxes boxes of CDs we ship,
even if we are a non-profit and giving them away for free. So, you need
to figure out how the EU organization can pay the tax or how to avoid
it, and whether or not the tax makes shipping CDs from the US completely
uneconomical.

Hmm, since i never got anything sent from the US, i don't know, how to
avoid this taxes. But i understand, that sending 100 or more CDs may
not count as a giveaway. Anyway, i will start looking into this problem.

Hmm, how about finding a company in europe, who will press some hundred
CDs? Anybody has an address and a price for this? Remember additionaly
labels.

I have almost convinced my boss at the City Council of Prato to print at
least 100 CDs of a live distribution. I am in touch with Robert for PG
Live. Also I have been told there is an Italian guys who's prepared
another live distribution, more oriented towards GIS purposes - but I
can't remember the name right now. Some guys of the Italian community
are evaluating that as well.

I need to get informed about taxes. There is a tax in Italy called SIAE
that we need to pay. However I am not sure if we have to even if the
distributed software is open-source. Will find out in the next few days.

Thanks.

Ciao,
Gabriele

Hi:

Included in the headers of every email in this list is the following:

List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:majordomo@postgresql.org?body=unsub%20pgsql-advocacy>

Most email clients will let you double-click that mailto: link to
create an email message addressed to majordomo@postgresql.org with a
message body of:

unsub pgsql-advocacy

Hope this helps you get unsubscribed.

yes

Live CD status

From
Robert Bernier
Date:
Guys,

I've updated the live CD to pg_live-8.2.4.1.

I will upload the iso image after getting feedback on what else should be on pg_live, it's a time constraint issue.

For the most part no new documentation has been added and I'm still using the same version of Xubuntu that I used the
lasttime. I'll add the Italian translation of the PostgreSQL reference documentation as soon as I get it sent to me
(theFrench translation is already there).

As per request, I've added the pagila database although I'm not clear where I can find the document "The Business Case
forPostgreSQL".

Joshua, any chance of getting a working version of plphp?

FYI: it is possible to change pg over to 8.3 if it comes out fast enough.

Comments?

Robert

Yeah, that'd be useful for a number of things; certainly for

Finally, after ~10 days, i got an answer from our customs office:

Everything below 22 Euro is tax-free.

CD-ROMs with computer programs on it (customs data number:
8523 4045 00 0): import sales tax: 19%.
Third country duty rate: free.
Then they sent a short help for calculation:

invoice amount, in Euro, from seller/sender
+ costs (includes postage, shipping, insurance)
= customs value * duty rate = duty
+ duty
= import turnover tax value * import turnover tax rate
= import sales tax

The german description contains words i have never heard of.
Hope, my translation matches more or less. Since in the customs info
office nobody is picking up the phone, i'm not really sure, but "invoice
amount" should match the costs of the CD-ROMs + press + labeling.

For native german speakers here is the original text:
----- cut -----
Rechnungsbetrag umgerechnet in Euro, ab Verkäufer /Versender
+ Kosten (insbesondere Porto/Fracht/Versicherung)
= Zollwert * Zollsatz= Zoll
+ Zoll
= Einfuhrumsatzsteuerwert * Einfuhrumsatzsteuersatz
= Einfuhrumsatzsteuer
----- cut -----

Maybe we need this informations sometimes in the future.
