G+PostgreSQL Advocacy

Hello All,

So, this is just kind of an "FYI" note to everyone on the list for no specific reason beyond, "Well, this is the advocacy list and these are people that might care to know such things!"

A few months ago, Thom pinged me about co-managing the G+ profile for PostgreSQL (and therefore the G+ Community as well).  I happily jumped at the chance, as I'm quite the staunch advocate of G+ (in spite of the stigma it undeservedly has, imho), and as much as I enjoy Postgres it seemed a no-brainer for me.  And today, for no particular reason, I thought it worth noting the following:

As I write this, our Twitter feed has 3,821 followers.

By contrast, we have 9,710 following our Google+ page, and 3,159 people in its G+ Community.

I wanted to point this out, as it's not unlikely that G+ is probably flying under (or off) your radar in spite of the fact that there are plenty community members on Blogger and/or Gmail and/or YouTube.  And if you've never considered it before, I wanted to encourage you to share your blog posts, YouTube presentation videos, and so forth; on the Community page.  A recent share of one of Dave Page's interviews, for example, proved quite popular.

On a related note — As Kris & Gabrielle have recently graciously (unwittingly? ;) ) allowed me to volunteer to get a G+ presence going for Postgres Open, I'm hoping to get some more synergy going in the realm of Postgres advocacy on Google+ with just a little more cross posting between organizations and events, as well as a little more activity from community members from time to time — even if it's just posting your latest blog post to drive more traffic to your blogs.  That would be a win for Postgres, in my mind.

Various other IT communities and topics are quite popular and active on G+.  Take Python, for example, with a community of over 100,000.  And personally, I'd like to see us surpass the 7k+ MongoDB community at some point soon ;)

That is all.  Carry on.  Thanks for you time!

Hi John:

I'm working on a couple things for our user group, including an upcoming meeting in August.  I will be posting to the G+ community for these events, and I will make sure I post to the community anytime I add anything to our web site that is of interest.

Thanks,

Can we get the planet feed to automatically post there, or would that result in too many duplicates?  I'd love to post our PDXPUG meetings to g+, but preferably without having to push any extra buttons.

+1

We also have a feed available of events that are posted to the PostgreSQL.org website - which would have the added benefit of promoting all of the upcoming major PostgreSQL events.

It registered the PGDAY Cuba this year there on this site

Hmmmm... automated posting to G+.  It's a great thought.  But I don't know if there's an API one could make use of.

I'm in a different boat with pgMKE because our "web site" is a G+ page and I create events as G+ Events which are a piece of cake to share.  But I realize that doesn't fit for everyone, and http://www.postgresql.org/about/events/ is and should always be the central list.

A better method than a manual one from each event's organizer doesn't come to mind at the moment.  Any suggestions that would improve upon that are most welcome.

For the minimum number of buttons to push, you could post just the link to your event, as Josh did.  (This might be useful for the majority of user groups that are on Meetup.)

a couple of other methods...

Go the route of creating an Event directly in the PostgreSQL Community as yourself, like Gilberto did:

In the case of pgMKE — the pgMKE Page shared to the PostgreSQL Community the Event it (pgMKE) had already created:

There isn't. If you look for it, you can see there are a lot of people
complaining about the lack of API. Apparently there is an API around
somewhere, but it's only available to "select enterprise providers".
