Contest: Theme, Slogan for 9.4

From
Josh Berkus
Date:
All:

We need a theme and a slogan for the 9.4 release in order to reach a lot
of developers. That is, something which summarizes what the 9.3 release
is "about".

Since I'm completely out of ideas, I've convinced Mark Wong to donate
one of his irresistable Chelniks as a prize for whomever can come up
with a good, catchy theme and slogan idea for the 9.4 release which we
can pick and run with. You don't need to design the art for this, just
provide the text and some ideas.

Chelnik: http://pdxpug.wordpress.com/category/chelnik/

Example good themes include:

9.0: Replication Made Easy

9.2: Racecar-like Performance

9.4: It doesn't get simpler.

I certainly hope some things get simpler than 9.4, especially where
recovery.conf is concerned. ;-)

Or is that a backhanded way of saying "Postgres just gets more
complicated from here"?

Not saying I like all (if any) of these ideas, but:

* 9.4: Your Relational Database, Reimagined
    - PostgreSQL 9.4 gives you the flexibility of efficiently storing and retrieving JSON along with the security of
thepast 15+ years of relational database development

* NoSQL + YeSQL = PostgreSQL 9.4

* Flexible, Fast, and Reliable - PostgreSQL 9.4

Why not :

  * PostgreSQL 9.4, extending NoSQL capabilities

if this is the main feature we want to put ahead ?

With utmost respect, these are all pretty generic, and could have
applied back to just about any recent previous version.

How about:

9.4: More ways to database

?

I think that the indexable jsonb support is probably the most marketable
feature, and that Postgres can now outperform many document-only DBMSs while
also still being the best current relational option. With that in mind:

9.4: Have Your JSON and Index It Too

9.4: Best of Both Worlds (relational and document)

9.4: All Your Documents Are Belong To Us

9.4: Fast JSON With All the ACID

And I or others can probably think up more along those lines.

We could just as easily say that about our other release, too :P

However, it is cute and clever and we can build a lot of different explanations off of it.

With regards to JSONB, which does seem to be
one of the biggest selling points for new users:

- Beyond the schema.
- More than just SQL.
- The schemaless schema.
- SQL, and then some.
- SQL unlimited.
- Strictly schemaless.
- All your documents are belong to us.

"SQL!"

"Document!"

There was a Parkay margarine commercial long ago that went something
like that. And of course, there's the timeless Saturday Night Live
skit featuring a product that combined the functions of dessert
topping and floor wax.

Now I'm starting to think of slogans like "Postgres: More Than SQL". (Of course, I'm still working on a PostgreSQL jingle, so...)

I think that, while a good slogan/market focus should be on Postgres becoming
more inclusive to data models, calling it "universal" is over broad.

When the Postgres core sans any contrib modules or extension etc becomes
computationally complete for users, meaning users can make it simulate any other
programming language or a turing machine with nothing more than they can write
from scratch at a Postgres command prompt (meaning no C etc), then we can call
it "universal".

9.4: Chelnik's choice of database for amigurumi around the world.

:)

Mark

I voted against that one because I think it's way too much like sqlite's
slogan (Small. Fast. Reliable.
Choose any three.) but I guess the people have spoken.

It wasn't my favorite either, mostly because it's not very specific to
9.4. However, there isn't much ambiguity in the voting.
