Thread: Commercial affiliation?

Commercial affiliation?

Hi,

I think I know the answer to this question already, but I've been
asked to get a definitive answer, and I think this list is the place
to find it.

I work for SQL Power, a Canadian data warehouse and data migration
consulting company. PostgreSQL is our favourite database platform: we
prefer to use it when the choice of platforms is ours to make, and we
recommend it when customers ask us what to use.

We also have several applications (two of them are open source) that
are thoroughly tested against PostgreSQL (it's our favourite database,
so it gets the most testing!).

The question is, beyond quietly advocating the use of PostgreSQL, is
there any official way for us to affiliate ourselves with the
PostgreSQL project and become official advocates, promotional
partners, or some such thing?

I'm thinking the answer is something like, "no but you can put one of
the logos from the propaganda page on your web site." I'm just
wondering if there's anything more "official" we can do.

Thanks for any advice/pointers you can provide!

There are a number of things that can be done:

 1. Become a financial sponsor
   * Contact me directly about various ways to do this
   * Visit: http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/BoothPolicies which
discusses some of the benefits
 2. Ensure that you have contributors on staff
 3. Donate servers
 4. Make sure you say, "Powered by the only real database: PostgreSQL"
on every product, email, signature, radio spot, flyer, tatoo, and
screen saver :)
 5. Contribute in general, write a whitepaper for example

Sincerely,

Joshua D. Drake

Thanks Joshua and Michael!

These are great suggestions, most of which we haven't pursued yet. I
have personally been advocating use of PostgreSQL inside and outside
SQL Power for years, and of course I'll continue to do that.

Also, I did attend PGCon last year. I had a great time (with both the
lectures and the drinking), and I'll be back again this year for sure.
In fact, SQL Power is one of this year's PGCon sponsors!

My official role here is software development, not marketing, but I
will certainly make the time to personally act on several of your
suggestions. I'll also see what I can do to get the actual S&M, er,
Sales&Marketing people involved in this too. :)

Thanks again for your responses. Hope to see you at PGCon.

I would second this suggestion. It sounds particularly apt for you since as a
data warehousing consulting company you have a wide range of examples to
choose between. I'm not sure how you could convince a customer to write about
them though.

If he can, though, we have some new writer-volunteers, so the timing is good.
