Thread: Looking for someone to graphic design 9.4 flyer
Folks: I have an idea for a 9.4 flyer. It would use the "NoSQL on ACID" emblem on one side, and on the other, the concept of "It's a Relational Database! It's a Document Database! It's Both!". This concept would be based on this famous American comedy sketch: https://screen.yahoo.com/shimmer-floor-wax-000000185.html In it, Chevy Chase promotes Shimmer as both a Floor Wax and a Dessert Topping. Problem is ... my computer graphic design skills suck. So I'm looking for someone who can create this concept for a flyer. Why don't we spend some of SPI/Postgres' money on commissioning someone to come up with a concept and design it. Why don't we spend some of SPI/Postgres' money on commissioning
someone to come up with a concept and design it.
Trying to get someone to design another person's concept is never
going to work well.

It would use the "NoSQL on ACID" emblem I like that emblem. Just yesterday, I talked to a CEO who thinks of relational databases as simple and slow. In contrast to MongoDB, which he considers to be sophisticated and fast. Relational databases clearly have a marketing problem, today. Let's fix that! >> on one side, and on the other, the concept of "It's a Relational >> Database! It's a Document Database! I've never heard of it before. So the flip-side slogan you're proposing doesn't ring a bell for me. (Which might not be an issue; depending on your target audience.) >> Any takers? > > Trying to get someone to design another person's concept is never > going to work well. As much as I like the "NoSQL on ACID", I'd also recommend to open up and see what ideas other people come up with. Regards Markus Wanner

I also thought the slogan was great and stickers with the design very attractive. Attractive enough that I grabbed a bunch at the last meetup and still had a bunch of them in my backpack while waiting in line at customs to return from a vacation in the Dominican Republic last week. Only then did I realize:
- Most people, and probably especially border officers, will not think of databases when they see “ACID”
- The pastel colors and elephant, while attractive, are pretty clear about their inspiration
- Blotting paper or stickers make a great delivery mechanism for that other definition
While I relished the thought of explaining the principles of a relational database to the friendly airport staff I was relieved when I got through the line without having my bag searched.
So: great design! Maybe too great for the paranoid among us? :-P
