Thread: Looking for speakers for Open Source Bootcamp
Hello,
I am the organizer of a free ($0) monthly mini-conference called open source bootcamp - http://osbootcamp.org.
osbootcamp exists to teach people skills with open source software so they can be aware and get started in the community. It is best described as a series of short talks around a theme for that osbootcamp event.
Currently, we're running events every month only in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada that have been packing the room (~80 people) each time. My reason for writing today was to ask for help with an event this summer in Ottawa. osbootcamp5's theme is RDBMSs. I am looking for a speaker or two to talk about PostgreSQL. The event is on May 20th running 4pm-7pm. This is the same week as pgcon and on the first day of workshops.
If you or someone you know might be interested in helping us, please contact me.
Thank you,
Andrew
p.s. For people not in Ottawa: we are starting to look at doing osbootcamps in Toronto, New York, London, Paris, and in the valley in California. If you're interested in helping with these, or proposing a new location, please contact us at osbootcamp@gmail.com. Thanks again.

For those attending PGCon, the above event is held after the end of the first day of tutorials. Given that we'll have 50+ PostgreSQL people already in town by that time, I imagine we can get a couple people. Just assume that we're going to do this and Dan and I will recruit speakers as we know people's travel schedules. I assume you'd prefer newbie-oriented talks? > p.s. Hi Josh, Thank you for the quick reply and for the support. For osbootcamp5, Carleton University has generously provided a *very* big room so there's no problem with space. All are welcome and I do ask attendees to email osbootcamp@gmail.org to let us know you're coming so we have enough food. You're correct about newbie oriented talks. So far we've been running around 75% students with some but not a lot of open source experience. For our summer events, we're doing work to invite even more business and some government people to push the outreach aspect of osbootcamp and hopefully help the students find employers/employers find students. You're right about the other events out there. I have nothing but good things to say about the events I've been to. osbootcamp is aimed at open source newbies in a format they can realistically digest. It aims to give them a good sense of the software/community and tell them where to find out more. Talks are short to keep people fresh and engaged. osbootcamp covers everything open source which is a nice feeder program/series for more specialized events like bsdcon, pgcon, OLS, EclipseCon, etc. It's a gateway to helping people make their way to less newbie aimed events such as barcamp/democamp. This is how I see it anyhow. :-) Thank you again, Andrew http://osbootcamp.org -----Original Message----- From: pgsql-advocacy-owner@postgresql.org [mailto:pgsql-advocacy-owner@postgresql.org] On Behalf Of Josh Berkus Sent: April 13, 2008 5:20 PM To: pgsql-advocacy@postgresql.org Cc: Andrew Ross Subject: Re: [pgsql-advocacy] Looking for speakers for Open Source Bootcamp Andrew, > Currently, we're running events every month only in Ottawa, Ontario, > Canada that have been packing the room (~80 people) each time.
