Thread: Ohio LinuxFest 2007 CFS
They are now soliciting proposals: -------------- http://www.ohiolinux.org/speak.html Ohio LinuxFest 2007 will be held Friday, September 28 through Sunday, September 30 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Most presentations will take place on Saturday. The audience will consist of a wide range of Linux community members, including devoted end users, independent developers, small systems integrators, as well as IT architects and engineers. Organizers are seeking approximately 20 speakers to address community-related technology and/or topics of interest. Each presenter will be allowed 45 minutes. Organizers will provide A/V equipment. -------------- I spoke at this last year, presenting on "what's new with 8.1 and 8.2?" <http://penguin.ohiolinux.org/2006/speakers.html#talk17> It's worth putting this onto the schedule of "things that probably ought to get prepared for"; note that they intend to close the call July 15th. In principle, I could go again, and do "what's up with 8.3?" We might have an idea of what the list of new features is by then :-). -- (format nil "~S@~S" "cbbrowne" "linuxdatabases.info") http://cbbrowne.com/info/nonrdbms.html "It is easier to move a problem around (for example, by moving the problem to a different part of the overall network architecture) than it is to solve it." -- RFC 1925

I'd been meaning to ask if you were intending to come back this time around. Last year's talk did spark some interest from the crowd, and so perhaps another round of What's New is in order. Had pondered putting together a "proprietary to PostgreSQL migration" talk myself. Of course not being too familiar with parts of some processes could lead to a little trouble, but I suppose there's still some time to figure that out. ;) Best, Josh Williams

I would love to go to this too, but Sun's unlikely to spring for it even if they are a sponsor. However, you're not much closer than me, are you? Surely we have some community members closer to Ohio? -- Josh Berkus PostgreSQL @ Sun San Francisco

I _will_ be there, and I'm contemplating putting together a talk about HA web apps with Postgres on the backend. I'll struggle through some of the details and send a proposal in this weekend. -- Bill Moran http://www.potentialtech.com

However, you're not much closer than me, are you? Yes, I am materially closer. It's drivable, albeit a long day of driving; last year, I flew, which was definitely nicer :-). > Surely we have some community members closer to Ohio? Probably so. The one reason I'd selfishly think of to speak, myself, is that I'd kind of like to catch the event, and it is far enough that I would have a hard time justifying (to myself :-)) going if I'm not speaking. Of course, that's not necessarily a good enough reason for everyone else :-). -- output = reverse("moc.liamg" "@" "enworbbc") http://linuxdatabases.info/info/nonrdbms.html Rule of Scarcity "If it's not allocated by a market, then it's more expensive than money." -- Mark Miller

Unfortunately I don't have enough in-depth experience (yet) related to PG to give a PG-specific talk. Having said that, I worked on an article for LinuxJournal last year regarding "The complete OSS small business environment". It didn't get finished because the CRM app wasn't mature enough; however, now it is. This is related because I had planned to use triggers in PG to migrate data in real-time between the accounting and CRM apps. I don't know if I'll have enough time this summer to put together a talk on the subject, but I'll consider doing so. Thanks, -J

Perhaps you could give a talk there (or someone could anywhere!) about the "gotchas" involved in picking up Postgres. I know that some things are probably now "obvious" to me that one time threw me for a loop. I just don't know what they are any more. :) Someone talking about that with fresh eyes might be helpful to the community. AIUI .org sponsorship is available for ~$75 which also gets us booth space. I think SPI could probably pick up the tab on that, and we could send flyers and CD's as well. Assuming Chris or anyone else shows up (there's an outside chance I'll make it, its a 6.5 hour drive) you'd have some extra staffers to help, but I think we need someone local to get the ball rolling. -- Robert Treat Build A Brighter LAMP :: Linux Apache {middleware} PostgreSQL

I'm willing to help. I don't want to spend all of my time staffing a booth, however, so I'm only interested if there are enough other folks helping out to ensure that I'll have time to see some of the talks. I think about 4 people is a good number. -- Bill Moran http://www.potentialtech.com
Guys, What about doing a combined booth with either FreeBSD or Solaris? I'd imagine that they both have people going, but not enough to easily staff a booth either. Alternately, if you have 3 commitments, then why not assume you're doing a booth and solicit volunteers on both pgsql-general and PWN? I'd be surprised if you can't pick up at least 2 more people. -- --Josh Josh Berkus PostgreSQL @ Sun San Francisco

(Can't believe I still have the schedule.) In any case I'm reasonably local, so you all definitely have one more available booth volunteer. Best, - Josh

We should see about setting up a discussion list somewhere relevant to help coordinate people's activities for this.
