Thread: Initial draft for our "Code of Ethics and Conduct"

Initial draft for our "Code of Ethics and Conduct"

From
Justin Clift
Date:
Hi all,

This is the first draft of a "Code of Ethics and Conduct" document for
us. It includes bits about our Mission and similar, and is based on the
draft document for another Open Source Software group.

Not sure what people think, but my hope is that it'll give us a good
basis for making future decisions upon, in a transparent and predictable
manner.

What needs to be added, altered, changed, etc?

:-)

Regards and best wishes,

Justin Clift

If this refers to new Marketting/Advocacy members I think this may not
be workable unless a lot of people are leaving the group. Otherwise
it implies that the group must double in size every year for enough people
to be available to be mentored.

> - Tell only and all the truth

What about exceptions for people who have signed NDAs?

> - Abide by the laws and the regulations of the juristiction

Was this supposed to be "their" (instead of "the") juristiction?
I wouldn't want to agree with that (but then I am not really a good
candidate for the advocacy group) as it would rule out civil disobediance
or just ignoring stupid laws.

> - Choose PostgreSQL solutions whenever those meet the needs of the users

I think this is a bad idea. The ethical thing to do is to provide people
with the best soltuion for them taking into account all of their needs.

Ok, good point, that may not be needed for us. :)

Then again, it might turn out to be useful... reckon it's feasible to
do, and to maintain "quality" with?

Ok, how about:

  - Tell only and all the truth, where legally permissible?

Hmmm, good point. Not sure about the civil disobediance. We should
probably narrow it down to "their" and also ensure the focus is on
PostgreSQL (or Open Source) related activities.

Ok, very, very good point. Should have thought of that myself too, as
thats the way I work.

;-)

I'm going to bed soon, so I'll have to read comments in the morning.

'nite all

I am not sure how best to say this, but I think the Advocacy team should
be also trying to help people who could benefit from PostgreSQL but who
aren't currently members of the PostgreSQL community.

Part of being responsible includes good and active communication.
If one takes on a responsibility and cannot fullfill it completely, that person
must communicate to the group as soon as possible so that someone else can
pick up the task or the group can work around the problem. As
this is a volunteer group, people have other responsibilities and
sometimes have to bail out. Good communication is critical for
this type of situation.

This idea follows for items that have a due date and cannot be
completed by that time. The responsible person must communicate
that information in a timely manner.

We know these things happen, but if we make a point to talk to
each other, then shifting responsibilities does not have to be
an overwhelming problem.

Also, who is considered to be "a member" at this time? Josh, Bruce
and Robert Treat are the ones listed on the web site. What about
other active members of the mailing list? What is the criteria for
being a member of the advocacy group? Who decides?
