Thread: Sourceforge PG release

Sourceforge PG release

From
Bruce Momjian
Date:
I see someone updated our Sourceforge web site with 8.4 today:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/pgsql/files/

This raises a few questions:
o Why was this not done more promptly?o Why is Marc not listed as an admin?o Why do I not have release permissions
forour project?o Why is 8.3.7 listed on the main project page, and not 8.4?

On project admin page, 8.4.0 is listed as primary download (and there
are no alternative downloads). However, front page refused to pick it
up. I read that sf.net is doing some maintenance (I got lots (really
lots) of error 500 while trying to view our sf.net pages) -- so I'll
wait until Monday. If it is not fixed until then, I'll but sf.net team.

Don't know. When I was added to project a few years ago, only you and
Robert was an admin.

You should -- what kind of an error did you get?

Oops, I just saw that you were not granted permission for that. Fixed.

This means we can start blaming Bruce for releases not getting put up,
right? :-D

Perhaps. My big question is why we are doing this now, and not a few
days ago. Updating external download sites was supposed to be on some
checklist so we didn't have to fix this days after the official release.
Where is it listed?

Thanks. Here is the line that I am interested in:
7/1 19:00 6/30 15:00 Update Freshmeat etc. Jonathan F. Josh & Devrim

OK, so why wasn't this done? And who is Jonathan F.? Can we please
spell out his full last name because if I don't know who he is, others
don't as well. And Marc should be listed as a backup on that item, I
think.

Note the "including a PM". One per release, tracking and delivering.
Community driven, public reporting.

I can help preparing a project template draft.

Thats what we already have essentially. We just had an issue with one
minor item which got overlooked.

Fwiw, i think having an sf.net project is a *bad* idea anyway. It's
confusing for people who find that project and don't realise it's not
actually used for anything. It seems a strange thing to maintain
anyway - it's not exactly likely to attract new users.

Actually, someone wrote a nice script that goes out and checks the various
sites and send out an email when out of sync ... that was how I knew I
couln't update sourceforge, as I got the email, and tried to update it ...

More useful then a checklist, as its "in your face" ...

OK, thanks. I have updated the release checklist wiki to include his
last name:
http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/84WebTasks#Scheduled_Deployments

However Jonathan Fuerth is not listed as a SourceForge PG project
member. Jonathan, what is your sourceforge user id? I see ony Marc
listed as a project member. Marc, can you add me too (bmomjian)?

Sorry, I was confusing. I added you to SourceForge, but then I started

Yes, my Freshmeat account is jfuerth, and it appears I already have
access to edit the Freshmeat entry. However, Marc already took care of
this on July 1.

As for SourceForge, my account name there is also jfuerth. It appears
I do not presently have access to edit the SourceForge project.

So 65000 are battling the sf.net advertising network, and perhaps not
realising we have a thriving community over here.

I honestly don't see how having a sf.net page helps our users get the
most out of the project, or helps us as a project.

Moreover when you search for "postgresql" in SF.net you get a lot of
stuff but NOT PostgreSQL itself, at least not in the first 3 pages. +1
for getting rid of it.

Perhaps they simply don't enjoy our community or they simply don't
want to become a part of it, or they even don't know about the

It's just another place where to get the stuff from, and nothing else.

I have added Marc as a Sourceforce Admin with Release Tech permissions,
just like me. Hopefully this will improve our future release management
process.

Also, Sourceforce now shows Postgres 8.4 on its main page so that issue

They don't have to join the community if they get the code from us,
but others that don't know about it, and then download from sf.net
don't even get the chance to see what we have to offer.

I think we're of such a size now that we don't need an sf.net page to
drive people to us, but should get rid of it to avoid 'diluting' the
project.

However I have a few questions.

- why is 7.3 still listed?
- why is the 8.4 branch listed last?
- why, in each branch, the oldest release is listed first?
- why are not all stable releases listed?
- why is there a "win32 installer" subpackage in the 8.2 branch, pointing to an obviously-outdated package?
And lastly,
- why do we have this listing at all and not point people to our
downloads page which is obviously always up to date and complete?

How does it 'dilute' the project? Is anyone over there actively
developing it? Are there any files uploaded over there? Forums active?

From what I could see, it all just pointed over to us for all that, but I
may have missed something ...

Hah - it gets worse!

This project: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pgsql/files/

Hosts downloads, has a 'Support' page that says:

----
Best Way To Get Help

Unfortunately, this project hasn't indicated the best way to get help.
Contact the project's administrators to find out how to get help.
----

and has a 'What's happening' section which mainly just shows Bruce
tweaking permissions, rather than any real project activity.

However, there is also this project:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freshmeat_pgsql/, which does just have
a bunch of links back to us. I assume sf.net are auto-generating this
from freshmeat.

It's also worth noting as I think someone else did, that searching for
'postgresql' doesn't actually find these projects, at least nowhere in
the first dozen results pages. I had to search for 'pgsql' to track
them down.
