Getting started - pgadmin3

From
Sherrie Kubis
Date:

Hello.  I am very new to postgresql, just getting started by hands-on.

I have postgres installed and a database running, also have pgadmin3 installed.

When I startup pgadmin I get the following message, but the app continues to open.

11:31:50 AM: Error: can't open file '/pgadmin3.lng' (error 2: No such file or directory)

I have the file pgadmin3.lng in the folder

/postgres/pgAdmin3/share/pgadmin3/i18n

[postgres@bkvlnxtest01 i18n]$ ls

This seems to be a very old bug and by very I mean a decade old.

Where did you download the PGAdmin from? Or have you restored it from a backup.

Try reinstalling it using a fresh installer from the following link::

You might like to give psql a try, it runs on the command line.

I have used pgadmin3, but tend to find psql plus a text editor, a lot
easier to use.

I create an SQL file, like join000.sql and execute it from psql:

    $ psql
    psql (9.4.6)
    Type "help" for help.

    gavin=> \i join000.sql
    DROP TABLE
    DROP TABLE
    DROP TABLE
    CREATE TABLE
    CREATE TABLE
    CREATE TABLE
    INSERT 0 4
    INSERT 0 4
    INSERT 0 8
      name
    ------
      x
      z
    (2 rows)

      name | sum
    ------+-----
      q | 9.9
      r | 10
    (2 rows)

      name
    ------
      a b
      p
    (2 rows)

    gavin=>

Cheers,
Gavin

postgreSQL was installed, and pgadmin3 came with it.

Installer version Version 9.5.1

I saw this error mentioned in a post from 2005 and thought it was weird that I got it again as well.

I wasn’t launching right, I was going right to pgadmin3 and running it.  If I use /postgres/scripts/launchpgadmin.sh it sets some things, then

instead I get a ton of

ontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/41-ttf-arphic-uming.conf", line 40: Having multiple <family> in <alias> isn't supported and may not work as expected

kind of errors.

Researching that.  My novice status is showing.

We are using Oracle Linux, just because we have that in-house right now and it’s in a test bed.  Our plan is to move to Red Hat because a third-party is supported there.

Launching from the menu options returns the same errors.

However, I’m not doing anything from the menu because it looks like a Desktop from the server console is needed, which in our environment are the ‘root’ people.

Unless there’s a way to start the application menu from an os prompt, haven’t figured that part out yet.

My suspicion is that the font errors are just something we’ll need to iron out when we start doing this for real, that perhaps not all the fonts are updated or installed.

So this could be an OS issue. Can you try installing the PGAdmin on your local machine and then try connecting to the server. You will need to add your ip to the postgres server to make sure it allows your machine connections.

Thanks Amit, I agree, it points to a server issue, where I don’t think the fonts are perhaps missing.  This is a small test server that our SA uses for little things.  We are moving on to a real test environment and will make sure of the install pieces before continuing.

Again, I appreciate the help.
