Thread: Tasks for the Google Code-In
The Oregon State University's Open Source Lab (OSL) has contacted me about coordinating some student work for the Google Code-In, a program targetting 13-18 year olds.
See more here: http://code.google.com/opensource/gci/2010-11/index.html
This program specifically allows documentation, testing and advocacy activity not normally allowed in the Google Summer of Code. And OSL is offering to be an umbrella organization -- handling the administrative details for us.
So! Do you have some 2-3 week projects in mind? Please post some ideas, and we can get this going.

But, actually, time flies, and I still haven't found the time to work on it. We're still looking at tools that we will use to write the documentation. Anyway, even if they do this with OpenOffice.org, it would really help us. Do you think this could be a good project? I don't expect a full documentation, but having an explanation of the menus and dialogs components would be great. -- Guillaume http://www.postgresql.fr http://dalibo.com

This is probably just useless noise, feel free to ignore. But a friend was trying to convince me to look into Mallard for PostgreSQL related documentation, see here: http://projectmallard.org/about/index.html http://projectmallard.org/about/learn/index.html I find it neat in that it's only complex enough to build technical documentation. -- Álvaro Herrera <alvherre@commandprompt.com> The PostgreSQL Company - Command Prompt, Inc. We're still looking at tools that we will use to write the documentation.

Yes, that sounds great.
I think we should probably break it down into a few chunks so that it is easy for students to circle back and get feedback, and document some requirements for screen captures (size, resolution).
I'll loop you into conversation with OSL!
thanks,

Selena, If there's a student who's interested in benchmarks, they could work on developing a set of "performance unit tests" using pgbench for different kinds of database activity. I could mentor this or a couple other people could. -- -- Josh Berkus PostgreSQL Experts Inc. http://www.pgexperts.com
Selena, All, OK, I just talked to Carol about this and apparently they do get desingerly and markety teenagers as well as programming geeks. So we should come up with a list of tasks assocated with advocacy stuff. For example: a) Design a new "About PostgreSQL" flyer b) redo the "About" section of the web site c) create a simple webapp to support reference users / case studies d) Design a cool new postgresql t-shirt e) Create a list of OSS applications which already support Postgres f) ??? Ideas, folks? -- -- Josh Berkus PostgreSQL Experts Inc. http://www.pgexperts.com

But ... can you break out any specific tasks? Don't think so.. The CSS stuff needs cleanup and overview, but I think Thom is looking at that already ;) -- Magnus Hagander Me: http://www.hagander.net/ Work: http://www.redpill-linpro.com/

Hi all, a 2¢ contrib : f) CTO oriented papers ? «this one intends to highlight PostgreSQL interests from different point of view (ROI, technical, infrastructure, business/SW editors)» g) Success stories with PostgreSQL (link with the webapp reference/case studies ?) Think (also) about regional targetted success stories. For my own point of view, relaying that a french institution publically and successfully uses PG is a better argument than Fujitsu's sponsorship. Success stories are collected by local PUGs but could be relayed to an broader place ? There's more hits from france on pg.org than on pg.fr (well I gess...) ;) I my thoughts the avereage guy might be interested in knowing « which business, which institudion uses PostgreSQL in my area ?». Sorry if out of scope ... -- Jean-Christophe Arnu PostgreSQLFr
