URGENT - Postgres won't work

Hi All,
I have the following problem: (RH7.1, PostgreSQL 7.4.1)
After stopping postresql service the /data/pgsql/tgr/data/postmaster.pid is
not deleted.

Starting Postgresql (after deleting the pid file manually):
-------------------------------------------------------
[root@tgrweb /root]# /etc/init.d/postgresql start
Checking postgresql installation: no database files found.
Initializing database... [ OK ]
Starting postgresql service: [ OK ]
-------------------------------------------------------

Trying to start psql console:
-------------------------------------------------------
[tgruser@tgrweb tgruser]$ psql tgr
psql: FATAL: the database system is starting up
-------------------------------------------------------

When I try to 'ls -l' the $PGDATA/base/19536 directory then the console
freezes and does nothing. Can it be a filesystem error? Or what else? What
can I do with it? How can I check it? The system is on a RAID1 SCSI array.
Fsck says that it is mounted and not recomended running fsck on a mounted
volume.

Some log entries regarding SCSI (is any of them critical?):
-------------------------------------------------------

Sounds to me like you've got disk hardware problems :-(
