I'll bet you forgot -d in your last cvs update command.
I always use a ~/.cvsrc containing
cvs -z3
update -d -P
checkout -P
The -z3 might be an obsolete habit depending on what your network
connection is like ... but the other options are pretty much *required*
for sane behavior.
