This actually upgraded PgBouncer to 1.8.  The version number inside
shows 1.7.2, but it has all the features mentioned on 1.8 changelog.

The package was actually built some weeks ago when no release existed
yet (hence the snapshot version number). I only put it live now,
because I had forgotten about it.

The problem with 1.8 is that the tarball is missing the include/pam.h
file and hence doesn't compile... I've notified upstream about that.

Is it a good idea to build original 1.7.2 again?  Some people might
want to stay on the latest 1.7 release for a while even after 1.8
package is built.

We don't do that for other software either. 1.8 is not a new major
release.
