For what purpose? We already have user editable documentation at
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/techdocs

That has nothing to do with it.

Well honestly? Wiki is pretty much the standard way to deliver
collaborative content on the web.

I am not saying we should change, but to answer your question :)

It wouldn't be tough. Something I ran across this week that I have not
heard of was http://www.howtoforge.com which has been amazingly useful
to me in the last two days (learning Xen on Ubuntu).

We do have full editable content at techdocs as well. There are a couple
of problems with it:

1. You can't sign up from the techdocs area. You can only sign up from
the community area.

2. It doesn't tell you on the techdocs page that you need to signup at
the community area.

3. Community login is on the left hand side of the page, in small text
(white against a grey background) ;)

If we make it a bit easier to use techdocs, we can probably substitute
a wiki for it.

Sincerely,

Joshua D. Drake

Oh -- so you want a wiki for developer content? That is different.
I can set this up on community0 (the same machine we host search on)
in no time.

Do you have a particular favorite? Would you like Trac? With Trac I can
give you a wiki and the entire cvs (converting to svn) repo... You can
take a look here for the results:

FWIW, the new techdocs is still too buggy for the general community to use.

And sounds like a fine idea (I wouldn't want a wiki for user docs).

Sounds like an ideal new use for developer.postgresql.org. Any objections? What wiki?

mediapgwiki? Or Trac+Wiki? Those seem like the two obvious choices.

OK, I'll bung it on my TODO. Might be a slight delay as we're still
recovering from a lightning strike at work so things are a touch hectic
atm, especially given staff holidays and other absences :-(

JD: This would obviously be separate from the other Trac+Wiki that we
already discussed, so please don't pull Devrim off that job!

Regards, Dave.

No problem. I can setup trac in about 15 minutes. Let me review what is
going on, on that machine and I will get back to the list shortly.

mediapgwiki is fine, if it's anything like the Wikipedia wiki. Trac
seems to provide a lot more than a wiki, which we don't need for this.

Except I can't find it - only 1 single Google reference in an OSDL text
file. Is that name right?

Do we want to set this up as a replacement for developer.postgresql.org?
Does anyone feel up to being responsible for admin/setup? I can install,
that's the easy part ...

Thanks Josh. If you wanna install it Marc, please go ahead. It'll save

I was thinking that it would work well right at the root of
developer.postgresql.org...

I'd imagine wiki.postgresql.org -- it doesn't have to be *strictly* for
developers after all. You can probably set up the virtual host name
easily.

I disagree - I think it should be firmly targetted at developers to
prevent it becoming an unofficial documentation site, possibly
containing misleading or inaccurate information. I don't see this as
something we should expect to have to moderate/proof read.

O.k. hold on. Who is doing this, Marc or Me? I really don't care which
but I also don't want to duplicate efforts. I was going to put it on the
same machines as search.postgresql.org.

I'm going to set it up as developer.postgresql.org for now ... if we so
desire, after playing with it, to extend taht into wiki.postgresql.org,
that shouldn't pose a problem, or set it up as a seperate site from the
developers one ...

I believe it should be the new developer.postgresql.org, thus it's a job
for Marc (or me).

The 'other' one that you/Devrim are doing is a private trac/wiki for the
web team/server admins to document everything which Gavin will run for
us.

Not sure how either is relevant ;) but o.k. Long and short... if you
guys want to use the machine that search is on, please feel free. Dave
you have sudo rights on that machine so it should not be a problem.

Right which can also be on the same machine as search.
