Data type int8 using ODBC

I’m using PostgreSQL 7.4.3 in a Linux Slackware 10.0. With the ODBC engine running in linux (unixODBC and iODBC) itr wsn’a possible to retrieve fields with a data type int8 in postgreSQL. According the documentation the data type equivalent in C++ in the gcc compiler is int64_t. I only can retrive garbage. Please help me
