I am new to postgresql & tried to upgrade from 7.1.3 to 7.2  -- when I did
pg_ctl start I get this error

FATAL 1:  The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 7.1,
which is not compatible with this version 7.2.

Unfortunately, you haven't fully read the installation instructions.

The database formats fo 7.1.3 and 7.2 are not compatible.  You need to
reinstall 7.1.3 and use pg_dumpall to make a dump of your database(s):

su - postgres
pg_dumpall > your_dump

Then install7.2 again, run initdb to create a new database structure and
then "psql -d template1  < your_dump" to restore your data.
