Try kill -TERM <pid> instead of kill -HUP <pid> or kill-9 <pid>
If you have a shellscript that starts postmaster then you may start and stop
the postmaster.
I have one from SuSE-Linux :
(may be you have to configure for your system)
It is placed in /sbin/init.d/
Invoked during startup and shutdown
(You know the startup procedure in dependence of the runlevel ?)
