I would have expected to have something vice versa, meaning
move from ODBC to ESQL/C. This approach looks more
appropriate to me and easier to implement anyway.

Not if you have lots of ESQL-C code that you need to port
to a database that doesn't have an ESQL-C translator, but
does do ODBC.
