Thread: [RFC] Proposed split of -interfaces list ...
After some discussions with various members of the project, it was suggested that an RFC be sent out to the -interfaces list asking for opinions ... Due to the growing volume on these lists, primarily around the ODBC and JDBC drivers, I'm proposing that a split to this list be made, so that we have: pgsql-interfaces-odbc@postgresql.org - ODBC related discussions pgsql-interfaces-jdbc@postgresql.org - JDBC related discussions pgsql-interfaces@postgresql.org - libpq, libpq++, python, tcl The point of this would be to make it easier for those interested in one of ODBC/JDBC to follow discussions without having the other interfaces mixed in amongst it ... Eventually, if we need to, we can break off stuff like python/tcl/libpq,etc, but right now their volume is such that, I'd hazard a guess, they account for 1/3 of the traffic on the list, while ODBC/JDBC each account for 1/3 ... Now, one of the suggestions made was to 'disband' -interfaces and replace it with -interfaces-misc ... I'm kind of on the fence with that idea, simply because it means that those that aren't interested in JDBC/ODBC now have to re-subscribe to a new list ... I can create the lists and, if ppl use them, great ... if they don't, fine too ... but would like some feedback, as unless ppl do use the new lists, there is no point in creating them ... Marc G. I do seem to end up wading through a mass of JDBC stuff which is of no interest to me (nothing personal Peter!). Regards, Dave.

I agree also... I don't do C programming, so a huge chunk of the list info I scan and delete. Sounds logical. okay, so far, its all been positive feedback on this, so I'm going to go ahead with it ... with one slight change ... when we did the php list, I did it as: pgsql-php@postgresql.org -and- comp.databases.postgresql.interfaces.php that way, for email purposes, the address was shorter, less to type in ... I'd like to do the same with the jdbc and odbc lists, unless anyone has an objection to typing 11 characters less in an email address? :) On Thu, 18 Jan 2001, Adam Lang wrote: > I agree also... Who actually types their email addresses? Use an address book. ;) psql-odbc should be fine though. I agree with the proposed split described below. It does simplify the weeding process. As for changing -interfaces to -interfaces-misc, it makes little difference to me. Re-subscribing is not a big deal. > pgsql-interfaces-odbc@postgresql.org > - ODBC related discussions > > pgsql-interfaces-jdbc@postgresql.org > - JDBC related discussions > > pgsql-interfaces@postgresql.org > - libpq, libpq++, python, tcl

Sounds good to me.. and if for some reason someone doesn't want the split, they can simply subscribe to all three lists, which isn't a big deal. With that done, they still get everything, just with different addresses, which would be good for filtering/sorting. ..and dropping '-interfaces' sounds fine, but really doesn't make any difference to me. -Cedar
