Hello!
I've got postgresql-6.3.2 with RedHat-5.1 distribution.
I need to write scripts using perl. Where can I find apropriate perl
modules, And what should I do to create perl interface to Postgresql..?
Thank you..

Hi,
I am using linux slackware, kernel 2.0.33. I wonder if anyone
out there has successfully used jdbc with postgresql-6.3.2. I am
trying to run the examples and so far no luck. Getting desperate.

Thanks,

I'm using JDBC with postgresql with no problems. Perhaps you should
describe your problem.

The mistake made by many JDBC-Newbies is that they don't configure
their postmaster with '-i', please check this. A nother problem
is to fiddle with the pg_hba.conf.

All perl modules can be found in the CPAN archive at www.perl.org . In
particular, you want to download the DBI and DBD:Pg modules.

There is also a Perl module included with the distribution in the
src/interfaces/perl directory...I've never used anything else myself...

Hello gents,

You can run the `default' perl interface that comes bundled with PostgreSQL
or you can do as I did...Edmund recommended to me that I run the DBD-Pg
module as its syntax is less like libpq and more like traditional perl
and/or Embedded SQL/C.

If you dial up www.panix.com/~dbindex.html I have links to sunsite uk
where you can grab Tim Bunce's latest DBI and Edmund's DBD-Pg.
We also have the binaries if you run slackware...

Cheers,
Tom

This is the DBD::Pg module. You also need the DBI.pm module to make it
work. Also, CPAN should have the latest version of DBD::Pg.

Incidentally, if you use perl at all CPAN is absolutely indispensable.
The CPAN.pm module that is bundled with the most recent versions of perl
is really wonderful for managing it all. Type

perl -MCPAN -e shell

and see what happens.

David - are you sure about the interface that comes bundled being
DBD::Pg? It is *very* different from DBD-Pg-0.69 which I am currently
using...(?)

Also - the dbi mailing list is helpful (I believe I got to it via
www.fugue.com)

The one resource I wish we had is good documentation on Tim Bunce's
DBI. There is nothing of note in Learning Perl or the camel book.
Advanced Perl Programming has a blurb on dbi but it is very scant.
I haven't checked out Tim O'Reilly's Perl Resource Kit as I don't have
the $150 US. Is there anything of interest contained in it?

BTW, how is Montreal doing, in the wake of all the ice and hail the past
year visited on the NE?

Cheers,
Tom

The API has tended to shiftB around a bit.

Download and install DBI.pm from CPAN and then do perldoc DBI. This is
the same documentation that's included in the O'Reilly Perl Resource Kit
(in fact, it's more up to date).

I own the PRK and do use the books for some things, although I always
consult the online docs for any modules I use a lot.

Also, Srinivasan's 'Advanced Perl Programming' has some stuff on DBI,
although it's a bit sketchy on that topic. Great book in general, though.

Take a look at the small faq I have at http://www.retep.org.uk/postgres
