The program

/usr/bin/postgresql

need by initdb does not belong to PostgreSQL 7.4.7 or

there may be a configuration problem.

I'm going to guess a version issue.

You have initdb for a different version of postgres than the
/usr/bin/postgresql file.

What does:

initdb --version

show?

Is it the same as:

/usr/bin/postgresql --version

?
