Thread: hung postmaster?

hung postmaster?

From

I'm seeing some unpleasant database cluster seizures. After
running fine for hours, days, even weeks, all of a sudden new
connections via psql, DBI, libpq, all completely hang with no
log message or error, while existing connections can continue to
execute queries, log messages, etc. Postmaster is totally
unresponsive to SIGTERM, SIGINT, and SIGQUIT (sigkill is the
only thing that shuts it down). Memory, CPU, and available
connections are plentiful. Top, ps, glance, ls, netstat all are
very responsive. I/O load has been pretty high, averaging
700-1100 physical IOs/second. The first time this occurred,
last Friday, it was a mix of our 7.3.4 and 7.4.6 clusters.
Yesterday, it was all of the 7.4.6 64-bit clusters, none of the
32-bit 7.3.4 clusters. Today it was two of the 7.4.6 clusters
and no others.

I'm trying to get gdb installed so I can attach to postmaster and
get a backtrace. Other troubleshooting ideas appreciated.
Details below...

CONFIG:
========
Hardware: One HP 64-bit Itanium rx4640, 16gb RAM, 4 cpus, SAN
(Cisco switches, HP EVA-5000 disk array and FC HBA's).
OS: HP-UX B.11.23
Pgsql: 9 clusters installed and concurrently running. 4/9 are
32-bit PostgreSQL 7.3.4 on ia64-hp-hpux11.22, compiled by cc
-Ae. The other 5 clusters are 64-bit PostgreSQL 7.4.6 on
ia64-hp-hpux11.23, compiled by gcc 3.3.2.

(We have 2 other identical boxes running without incident with
similar cluster mixes of 7.3.4, 7.3.7, 7.4.6.)

gdb backtrace definitely sounds like a good idea. Also it might be
interesting to see the results of strace of the postmaster while hitting
it with signals. Find out if it's doing anything at all in response ...

Workin' on gdb/strace build, but having trouble with both. Gdb
just doesn't build from source, not sure why yet, and no depots
found at porting center. It doesn't appear that strace is
supported for 11.23 itanium based on strace README/PORTING files
and 'man 2 ptrace'. HPUX users, is that your experience?

Question: Am I doing all I can to avoid corruption with the
following procedure to shutdown a 7.4.6 cluster with a hung
postmaster? Suggestions?

1. SIGTERM non-postmaster processes
2. SIGINT non-postmasters
3. SIGQUIT non-postmaster
4. SIGTERM postmaster
5. SIGINT postmaster
6. SIGQUIT postmaster
7. SIGKILL postmaster

TIA.

Ed

What is the state of the processes in ps? D, S, R, ?? That should at
least give a hint as to what it *is* doing...

The options you can give to pg_ctl should cover all the
possibilities... There's also a page in the docs as to what each
process does with each signal...

Hope this helps,

The postmasters were sleeping. I was able to trace a local hung
psql client through lsof-->netstat to see the connection was in
tcp "ESTABLISHED" state.

Anyway, before we installed gdb (wdb) from hp dvd to get a
backtrace, I'd already guessed it could be a problem with the
build since the 7.4.6 build that was hanging was built with gcc
3.2.2, while the 7.4.6 builds on two other identical boxes were
built with gcc 3.4.2. So we shutdown all the 7.4.6 clusters,
rebuilt using gcc 3.4.2, identical build steps AFAICS, and this
nasty problem has apparently gone away (knock on wood).

I have saved a copy of the problematic gcc-3.2.2-built 7.4.6
installation executables, libraries, etc. in case anyone is
interested. Time permitting, I may fire them up with a new
cluster and see if I can recreate the problem to get a
backtrace.

Thanks.

Ed

Correction: problem was with gcc 3.3.2 build, not gcc 3.2.2.

OK, it appears I can reproduce this bug in fairly short
order. Below are gdb backtraces along with current
snapshots from ps, netstat, and a snippet of the server
log. This is no longer an urgent issue for me with the
gcc 3.4.2 workaround available, but I do have a stalled
test cluster postmaster right now, so I can leave it up
for a while if anyone cares for more information.

The identical source built in the identical fashion and
running on the same hardware, but using gcc 3.4.2
instead of gcc 3.3.2, continues to work fine and does
not exhibit this problem so far. Again, this is 64-bit
PostgreSQL 7.4.6 on HP-UX B.11.23 on ia64 box.

Details of current hang...

PIDS 29080 and 26752 in the listing below are hung,
apparently because the postmaster is hung (PID 28775).
PID 26752 is a remote psql client that wanted to just
connect, select version(), and disconnect. I had
that going in a loop, and this PID was the first to
hang; PID 29080 is a local psql client.

Ed, HP maintains a port of gdb called wdb (wildebeest). You should be
able to get this from them from http://www.hp.com/go/wdb/ but I'm
getting timeouts trying to connect right now. If this persists, let
me know and I'll try to find a way to get you my most recent download
from Dec 23.
