I would like to change the column length from varchar(10) to varchar(30).How this can be done.

Changing a column's type is discussed in the FAQ:

http://www.postgresql.org/docs/faqs/FAQ.html#4.4

In PostgreSQL 8.0 you'll be able to use ALTER TABLE.
