Is there a way to sort results as follows?

Acme
The Acme Company
Beer
A Boat Company
Boats
Cars
...

i.e., ignoring leading the's, a's, etc.?

Not built in.  You'll need to use some kind of pattern matching to strip
off the leading articles.
