I'm a newbie too. In my case I had to create the directories prior to initdb. Also I had to create the linux user "postrgres". If you're installing from RPMs, you shouldn't need to do that. Simply install the packages and run '/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql start' which will initdb and start the database for you. -Doug -- Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees. --T.
