Can anyone tell me what's going on here and how to fix
it?  Or where to find the answer?

This is just after starting up the server and running
the "initdb" command.  First tried in the default
location, then tried in a path I owned?

creating configuration files ... ok
creating template1 database in
/home/Joe/pgsql/data/base/1 ... child process was
terminated by signal 12
initdb: removing contents of data directory
"/home/Joe/pgsql/data"

SIGSYS (kill -l) shows normally that cygserver is not running.
