   It seems that the postgresql-8.3.5.tar.gz is not available at all mirror
sites.

This is not a *bug*.

8.3.5 was removed from FTP site, because it is already 4 minor releases
old. 8.3.9 is the latest in that branch.

However, you can find it here:

ftp://ftp-archives.postgresql.org/pub/source/v8.3.5/
