Well the dust is beginning to settle from the end of the development
cycle. No solid word yet on when the first beta will be released, but as
there are *a lot* of discussion still going on about the intricacies of
features like two-phase committ and PITR, we might not see a formal beta
release until after the middle of the month. Folks with experience working
with these features are encouraged to read the pgsql-hackers archives and
join in on the discussion.
As those discussions take place, coding continues on rounding out the
existing new features slated for the next release. Fixes ranged from build
fixes for OSX and *BSD to bug fixes for the new plperl code dealing with Safe
version and return types. Tablespaces saw the addition of tablespace
information to the psql \d display, and a has_tablespace_privilege() function
which checks whether a user can access a tablespace in various situations.
The timezone detection code was also modified to help improve accuracy of
results of default system timezone search.
One last change worth mentioning comes at us from the patch queue, and
that is the ability to move the PostgreSQL configuration files out of the
PGDATA directory. This should help on system that try to keep all application
configuration information in a universal place.
