Thread: Important OSCON update
Folks, For those submitting to OSCON: O'Reilly has told me that they want only 2 tutorials and 6 presentations from us! Really! Which means that as many people who can change their tutorial to a presentation before submitting it as possible, please do. I will be submitting only one presentation to avoid "bumping" other people from the community. -- -Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco
On the other hand, a large number of proposals shows that we are a strong community with a lot to offer. This is important and will influence our timeslots someone, IMHO. elein On Tue, Jan 27, 2004 at 03:07:57PM -0800, Josh Berkus wrote: > Folks, > > For those submitting to OSCON: O'Reilly has told me that they want only 2 > tutorials and 6 presentations from us! This was the same number as last year, as I remember. -- Bruce Momjian | http://candle.pha.pa.us pgman@candle.pha.pa.us | (610) 359-1001 + If your life is a hard drive, | 13 Roberts Road + Christ can be your backup. | Newtown Square, Pennsylvania 19073

My feeling is that we had a reasonable number of PostgreSQL folks last year, but not enough to justify dramatically expanding our conferences slots this year. Now if this year has lots of attendees, we might have more slots next year. We could actually go to them and say we want OSCON to be our big event each year, and if we get lots of people this year, can we have more slots next year. Basically, if we supply the attendees, they will give us the slots. Even last year, we had a whole room for a whole day, and that was an expansion from the previous year. -- Bruce Momjian | http://candle.pha.pa.us pgman@candle.pha.pa.us | (610) 359-1001 + If your life is a hard drive, | 13 Roberts Road + Christ can be your backup. | Newtown Square, Pennsylvania 19073

I'm just dissappointed that some of our people won't get to go because their presentations will be alternates. -- -Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco

If they want this to be a big PostgreSQL event, we have to get our people motivated to attend. -- Bruce Momjian | http://candle.pha.pa.us pgman@candle.pha.pa.us | (610) 359-1001 + If your life is a hard drive, | 13 Roberts Road + Christ can be your backup. | Newtown Square, Pennsylvania 19073

The only way that you can get more slots, in the long run, is to have more people that are going despite _not_ giving presentations. I'd rather like to head to the conference, but it may be difficult to justify the value to my employer if I'm not going to the additional effort of presenting. Getting numbers up to justify expanding the conference slots requires that there be more people that are shelling out full price for the conference. O'Reilly isn't looking to pay more presenters to come; they are looking to get attendees. -- wm(X,Y):-write(X),write('@'),write(Y). wm('cbbrowne','ntlug.org'). http://cbbrowne.com/info/spreadsheets.html "I've seen estimates that 10% of all IDs in the US are phony.
