Thread: Postgresql on Solais 7
Hello PostsgreSQL community, I just subscribed to the list to get information on PostsgreSQL on Sun Solaris 7. We would like to transfer our databases (currently on Sybase) into PostsgreSQL. We have currently our databases on a Sun Ultra Sparc 5 running Solaris 7. Are there binaries versions available for PostsgreSQL 7.X for Solaris 7? If not, what will I need to install the source code? Which compilers should I use? How difficult it is to install PostsgreSQL 7.X under Solaris 7? What level of expertise you really need (if you haven't got it yet ... we are not very good at this business ...) I understand that PostsgreSQL 7.X supports ODBC. Where can we get them? How it works. Ideally, we would like to use the ODBC to do maintenance and update of our DBs from a windows machine. Most of the people that provides data to us use personal computers with windows and MS Access. Any idea, suggestion or experience on the best way to migrate from an external (in this case Sybase) DBS to PostsgreSQL 7.X? Since most (but not all) our databases are not very large (10.000 records in each table, 5-20 tables) we were thinking of connecting the old and new database via ODBC. Is this possible? When we will have our data into PostsgreSQL (if ever !?) we would like to query them through HTML pages. We are thinking of using PHP. Is this reasonable?. Is there anything peculiar we should know when installing PostsgreSQL for this use? Any help will really be appreciated. go through the documentation on the postgresql.org site. you will get a good amount of info there. anyhow i have postgres working well on solaris 7. you will have to compile postgres source code and install it on your sparc. you will need gcc compiler, make, gdb or gdbm, gzip, bash which you can get in pkgadd format from sunfreeware.com. download these and install first. then get postgres source from postgresql.oeg and follow the instructions in the INSTALL script. you will also require to change your shared memory parameters in /etc/system after installing postgres. in the mean time now you will be busy with these first. then after finishing this you can jump on to kernel parameters , ODBC etc.... all the best... Howdy, > go through the documentation on the postgresql.org > site. you will get a good amount of info there. anyhow > i have postgres working well on solaris 7. > you will have to compile postgres source code and > install it on your sparc. you will need gcc compiler, > make, gdb or gdbm, gzip, bash which you can get in > pkgadd format from sunfreeware.com. download these and > install first. In addition to that it's worth referring to the FAQ at www.sunfreeware.com too. It covers pretty much all the little hurdles you will probably have to jump over to compile stuff on Solaris. There's nothing too hard about it though, just setting up the right paths and making sure you have all the necessary packages installed. -- Paul McGarry mailto:paulm@opentec.com.au Systems Integrator http://www.opentec.com.au Opentec Pty Ltd http://www.iebusiness.com.au 6 Lyon Park Road Phone: (02) 9878 1744 North Ryde NSW 2113 Fax: (02) 9878 1755
Hey, I even have postgres working on Solaris 2.6. I'm not sure if this is applicable to 7 or not, but you might want to be sure that you have all the latest patches applied to your OS. This often makes a big difference in something that works and something that spits out very strange errors on a nearly constant basis.
