Works for me. Care to give an example of your problem?

test=# create table t1 (c1 text);
CREATE TABLE
test=# insert into t1 values ('$sometext');
INSERT 0 1
test=# insert into t1 values ('sometext$');
INSERT 0 1
test=# insert into t1 values ('$sometext$');
INSERT 0 1
test=# select * from t1;
     c1
------------
 $sometext
 sometext$
 $sometext$
