Doesn't those capabilities depend only on the version control system 
you're using, not on the one used in the master repository.

I've never found that to be a problem. When my patch gets committed, I 
sometimes do a diff between my patch and the one that was committed to 
see what was changed, but after that i just do fresh checkout. Perhaps 
your patches are committed more often than mine? ;-)

That's not true. At least in the git mirror, the conversion programs 
group together commits to different files, so that they form a single 
commit in the git repository. Since CVS doesn't have that information 
explicitly, it's done by matching commit messages and the commit 
timestamp. It seems to work just fine.

Now that is certainly true.
