Stuart,
FE/BE = Frontend/Backend protocol. It is the over the wire protocol
Postgres uses to talk to clients (jdbc, odbc, libpq, etc.).
It is documented in the Developers Guide, there is a chapter titled
"Frontend/Backend Protocol".
