I'd prefer this version:
CREATE FUNCTION awlupdate RETURNS TRIGGER AS '
BEGIN
  NEW.lastupdate = now();
  RETURN NEW;
END' LANGUAGE plpgsql;
CREATE TRIGGER... the same.

But both methods are fine. The only thing is, the function must return TRIGGER
AFAIK.
