The Senior Database Administrator & Developer is a member of a team collaborating on the backend design and implementation of Sony online services including traditional OLAP as well as big-data solutions.  This role requires the blending of administrating and development activities with both SQL and No-SQL based systems.  A willingness to experiment with new database technologies is a must.  The candidate will work with other team members in maintenance of development and production systems, development of data models and implementation of those models in everything from application databases to production data warehouses.

 

Candidate needs to have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be a team player, interoperating with multiple teams across global time zones.  The candidate may be on call 24/7 during scheduled periods to support escalated issues.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with application developers in data modeling based on business requirements
  • Implement and tune queries used by other members of the development team
  • Work with QA teams in testing and verification of solutions
  • Participate in planning and design of the database architecture for large scale, production quality services
  • Work in pre-production environments to come with strategies and architectures for high availability, monitoring, database security, and backup
  • Day to day management activities of production databases for online system operations: monitoring, troubleshooting, backup, restore, change management, database upgrades & installs
  • Help set database and data warehouse technical direction and drive changes to improve operations, performance and scalability

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent 
  • At least four years’ experience in database administration and development work
  • At least two years’ experience in administrating production databases for consumer-facing Internet services
  • Relational database experience including PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQL Server
  • Ability to implement connection pooling, cluster configuration and operation
  • No-SQL database including document and key-value store databases including Mongo, Vertica, or Redis
  • Experience with Java/Python based O-R mapping solutions
  • Familiarity with Java EE and Python application frameworks is a strong plus

Preferred Education / Skills:

  • Expert in administrating and operating PostreSQL and PostgreSQL-like databases including Greenplum and EnterpriseDB
  • Experience with reporting software tools such as BIRT, Jaspersoft, Cognos, or Crystal Reports
