Position Description

IS Database Administrator
The Northwest Evaluation Association is a non-profit corporation committed to providing quality assessment resources to
schooldistricts. Our mission is Partnering to help all kids learn. We offer assistance with all phases of developing a
purpose-drivenassessment program - from design and planning around current and future needs, through implementation and
refinement,scoring and reporting, and using data for decision making. Requests for NWEA's services have increased
dramaticallywithin the past few years, and we are in need of additional staff to help us meet our commitment to provide
qualityproducts and timely services.  
Position summary

The Database Administrator (DBA) has responsibility for the overall health of all database environments at NWEA. The
DBAworks with a team to provide the primary support for all development, test and production database environments to
ensureavailability, reliability, scalability, backup, recovery and performance. In addition, the DBA is expected to
participatein the 24x7 on-call support rotation.  
Responsibilities
* Maintain, Monitor, Configure and Tune databases and their related systems
* Review and Implement DDL changes to the database
* Participate in Database Capacity Planning efforts
* Perform User and Permissions Management
* Maintain database security: Ensure the protection of corporate data against unauthorized disclosure, accidental or
intentionalloss of data, unauthorized access and unauthorized modification by establishing and improving standard,
proceduresand practices related to database security and logins.  
* Perform Database software installation, patching, and upgrades
* Ensure organizational conformance to all database and data quality policies and standards
* Maintain and test database backup and disaster recovery plans, procedures and release of database changes according
toagreed timescales and costs  
* Responsible for troubleshooting and problem solving database issues
* Perform other work as assigned to ensure the success of the team and the organization

Skills and abilities
* Experience with Linux or Unix strong self-sufficiency and initiative working on Database projects
* Exposure to PostgreSQL, MySQL or Oracle.
* Knowledge of physical database design principles
* Understanding of administration & tuning tools
* Database performance tuning, optimizations and troubleshooting
* Experience in monitoring and tuning a database to provide a high availability service
* Demonstrated abilities in administration, including: installation, initialization, authentication, catalog
navigation,query tuning, system tuning, resource contention analysis, backup and recovery, standby, replication  
* Good listening skills and a commitment to communicate clearly, completely, and in a timely manner
* Ability to organize time effectively, determine priorities, and move work forward
* Ability to assess the effectiveness of processes and procedures, and recommend improvements
* Willingness to accept coaching to remove barriers to effective working relationships

Education and experience
* Minimum bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience
willbe considered in lieu of a degree  
* Linux enthusiast with good troubleshooting skills and a real interest in databases and database theory
