Seems like a reasonable thing to consider ... for 8.4.  I'm not willing
to go poking the syncscan code that much at this late point in the 8.3
cycle.  (I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet on -hackers, but the
current plan is to freeze 8.3.0 tomorrow evening.)
