What do you mean by a non-grouped query? The query below gives the same
error:

SELECT zipcode, COUNT(*) FROM prototype.customers, prototype.addresses 
WHERE 
customers.contactaddress = addresses.objectid 
AND 
zipCode < '2716BN'
