I also know that the Fred II site runs on PostgreSQL
(http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/) which contains federal economic
data.
Also if you just need some general case studies, we have a few available

Dravis Group report which covers the conversion of the .org tld from
Oracle to a PostgreSQL based solution.
