Since there hasn't been any substantial review of this feature in the
past two years, I'll withdraw the patch from the CF to keep things tidy.

I've refactored the patch in the meantime, mainly by adding helper
functions and more comments, so that it should be easier for someone to
pick it up in the future without having to start from scratch.
