which  OS or distribution is it?

look into the startup script that starts postgresql service.
The path is configurable depends on the package mantainer.
in redhat it used to be /var/lib/data.


if you can connect to the database as superuser you can give the command

 psql# SHOW data_directory;

in recent versions of postgresql.
