Following your situation what it seems you need to do is:
1) log into your server
2) log in as root (su -)
3) log in as postgres (su - postgres), which will work now even if
postgres doesn't have a password.
4) if your postmaster is running, create yourself as a user who can
create db's and users.
I think that will solve most of you problems.
