google groups would support both methods of access imho

I'm not suggesting its a good thing - perfectly happy with just email
myself and searching the list archives if need be.


Becomming reliant on a third-party host is a non-starter.  Nothing about the present system is so deficient that status-quo would be a less appealing option.
