I tried that already but unfortunately when you reconnect the server all previously connected dbs will reconnect along with the display layout they were in (how much the tree below the db was expanded) 

what I would like is a way to "close" or disconnect from all opened dbs and collapse the tree view for each individual db

All the connected databases will be disconnected if you just disconnect the server itself.
