Isn't bypassing the buffer cache exactly what direct I/O is about?
Solaris UFS has a "forcedirectio" mount option, AIX JFS2 calls it "dio"
and Veritas VxFS uses the "convosync=direct" option to disable caching
the content of the filesystem.
